0:59Now PlayingA whirlwind was spotted swirling near a lava fountain spewing from Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano on Sunday.
The spiraling dust devil struck a camera livestreaming the eruption, repeatedly sending debris toward the lens.
In a social media post, the United States Geological Survey said the whirlwinds form "in the presence of heat, which causes upward air flow, and strong windshear."
USGS said the lava fountain was the 49th such event in an ongoing volcanic eruption at Kilauea. The latest episode in the eruption began after 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning Hawaii time and lasted about seven and a half hours.
