3:21Now PlayingSupreme Court Justice Elena Kagan shared her and the high court’s condolences for Sen. Lindsey Graham’s death on Tuesday.
Testifying before a House Appropriations subcommittee, Kagan recalled her conversation with Graham leading up to her 2010 confirmation hearing.
“One would not expect such a cross-party, if you will, vote, certainly from somebody from a deep-red or deep-blue state,” Kagan said. “And yet Sen. Graham voted for me, and I vividly remember because he was a vivid person.”
Kagan said Graham got to know her and questioned her “with great seriousness and great knowledge.”
“I never got to know Sen. Graham very well, but I can see why so many people will deeply miss him,” Kagan said.
Kagan and Justice Amy Coney Barrett are appearing in both House and Senate hearings Tuesday. Members of the Supreme Court have not testified before Congress since 2019. Their appearances are focused on requesting more funding for security, as threats and incidents of harassment and intimidation aimed at the judiciary have risen.
The justices are making their rare appearance after the Supreme Court wrapped up its latest term late last month with major decisions on birthright citizenship, transgender rights, executive authority, campaign finance rules and mail-in voting – all topics that may come up in lawmakers’ questioning, in addition to the security funds request.
