Seventy-two people have been linked to the new outbreak, according to an update posted on the agency’s website Wednesday.
While the agency has launched traceback investigations, it has not provided any information on the source of the parasite or the outbreak location.
Messaging around these outbreaks has been confusing and health experts say that’s in part because of the difficulty in tracking the parasite, which also can’t be reproduced in a lab.
The previous major outbreak, focused in Michigan and four surrounding states, has been linked to shredded iceberg lettuce sold by Taylor Farms and grown in central Mexico, though that’s not been confirmed through lab testing. On Friday, the Washington Post reported that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has linked this outbreak to four additional states — Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania — bringing the total to nine.
Cases of cyclosporiasis have now been reported in 41 states.
While we wait for more information, these are still good food safety tips to follow: Wash hands with soap and water before handling food. Alcohol-based sanitizers don’t kill cyclospora, but soap and water is highly effective. Make sure to wash your produce well and cook food to at least 158 degrees Fahrenheit. Lastly, stay away from recalled produce and wash surfaces that it may have touched.
