Why Canadians are giving the U.S. the 'silent treatment'

Canadians are giving the United States the "silent treatment" amid the ongoing trade war and rhetoric from the Trump administration, says Christopher Sands of Johns Hopkins University.

"Canadians are not crossing the border," he told Compass Points host Nick Schifrin. "They're boycotting our products. A lot of people aren't taking vacations or coming to see sporting events in the United States."

Sands added that he wishes more Americans would speak out against the trade war and President Donald Trump's recent comments about their northern neighbor.

"One of the reasons this is so damaging is that Canadians are in a nationalist mood and they're feeling insulted, and their American friends and relatives are brushing it off," he said. "That's not the response Canadians want."
