1:42Now PlayingRep. Salud Carbajal, D-Calif., said President Donald Trump’s move to lift sanctions on Russian oil was a “massive gift” to President Vladimir Putin and his country’s struggling economy amid its ongoing war against Ukraine.
The lawmaker asked Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in a Wednesday budget hearing whether he was concerned that easing these sanctions would allow Russia to continue funding its war against Ukraine.
“We've seen Russia's and Putin's inability to make effective battlefield gains just like their inability to defend the [Nicolas] Maduro regime with the billions of dollars of systems the Russians sent to Venezuela in order to defend him, which were defeated in 15 minutes,” he said.
Carbajal repeated his question. Hegseth did not directly answer the question.
Hegseth and other Pentagon officials were invited to testify on President Donald Trump’s 2027 budget request to increase defense spending to $1.5 trillion – the largest proposed amount in decades.
The House hearing gave lawmakers a chance to question the defense leaders for the first time since the start of the war on Iran, which the U.S. and Israel launched at the end of February.
