2:11Now PlayingHampshire College is an "extraordinary place" with a long history of social activism, says sociology professor Margaret Cerullo. That legacy is now in danger due to a financial crisis that threatens to close the school.
"We were the first college in the country to divest from South African apartheid, winning us a letter of recognition from Nelson Mandela from jail. We were college to divest from the Israeli occupation of Palestine. In 2001, the entire college community voted against war with Afghanistan," Cerullo tells Democracy Now! "So there has been a consistent history, both on and off campus."
