She tells the story of how her son had already absorbed certain racial stereotypes by age five. Now 17, her son is the target of the same kinds of racial bias, she says. “His presence triggers the same kinds of thoughts,” says Eberhardt. “He is becoming aware of that over time and aware he could be seen as a threat in the eyes of others.”
