3:27Now PlayingAll departing flights were grounded as thousands of pro-democracy protesters shut down the Hong Kong International Airport Monday, filling the travel hub with protesters rallying against mainland political influence and police brutality. The latest escalation follows a weekend in which protesters were bloodied by law enforcement in a confrontation that turned especially violent on Sunday night when riot police flooded a subway station with tear gas and were filmed beating protesters with batons. Mary Hui, Hong Kong-based reporter for Quartz who has been covering the demonstrations, describes the source of public outrage, including the controversial extradition bill that sparked protest and sweeping authority that law enforcement uses to crack down on peaceful demonstrators.
