4:13Now PlayingThe widespread fires devastating the Amazon are occurring alongside Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s attempts to deregulate and open up the region for exploitation by agribusiness, logging and mining interests. Bolsonaro is championing privatization to give a “green light for illegal deforestation of the Amazon,” according to Maria Luísa Mendonça, a human rights activist and director of the Network for Social Justice and Human Rights in Brazil. The far-right president has recently cut funding and fired officials from agencies that monitor deforestation and pushed for the development of indigenous lands to effectively “promote destruction.” To fight against Bolsonaro’s inaction on climate and anti-indigenous policies, Mendonça is calling for an international boycott of the main commodities produced by Brazilian agribusiness, including beef, soy, sugarcane and timber. “Bolsonaro is really happy with the destruction of the Amazon. He is going to come up with any type of excuse not to take responsibility for what is happening,” says Mendonça. “Agribusiness is the main cause of climate change.”
