4:30Now PlayingInternational coverage of the political situation in the Philippines has generally focused on President Duterte's bloody war on drugs, which has killed thousands of Filipinos since Duterte took office in 2016. But in late July, the non-profit Global Witness released a report showing that the Philippines is also the most dangerous country in the world for environmental activists, who are often the targets of state violence. “A lot of communities have already been devastated by logging corporations and agribusinesses,” says Raquel Redondiez of SOMA Pilipinas in San Francisco. “Now, many multinationals, mining corporations, are really looking to push them out of their ancestral domain so they can take the natural resources from the ground… anyone who stands in their way is harassed and intimidated — or massacred.” Redondiez goes on to talk about the attempted assassination of Brandon Lee, a U.S. activist and journalist who has spent the last decade organizing among indigenous communities in the Cordillera region of the Philippines. Lee was born and raised in San Francisco.
