5:07Now PlayingThis weekend, President Trump announced on Twitter that he had called off closed-door negotiations with the Taliban aimed at ending the 18-year war in Afghanistan, the longest in U.S. history. The U.S. and Taliban had held nine rounds of meetings in Doha, the capital of Qatar, to discuss the possibility of a peace deal. Notably, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani had not been included in any of the talks to date.
Just when the two parties seemed close to signing an agreement, Trump suddenly withdrew from the talks. Trump said his decision was due to a Taliban car bomb in Kabul last Thursday that killed 12 people, including a U.S. soldier.
Ali Latifi, a freelance journalist; Kathy Kelly, co-coordinator of Voices for Creative Nonviolence; and Dr. Hakim Young, a medical humanitarian worker, explain that the negotiations are highly controversial, particularly because everyday Afghan people have been excluded from the talks. "These current peace negotiations to me are not genuine peace negotiations because Afghans are not involved," says Young.
