Labor reporter Steven Greenhouse says militant workers' rights advocates are revolutionizing the way unions organize. In his new book "Beaten Down, Worked Up: The Past, Present, and Future of American Labor," Greenhouse devotes a chapter to what he describes as the “most impressive, most forward-looking, aggressive” workers union in the United States: the Culinary Workers Union in Las Vegas, Nevada. Currently representing more than 60,000 hotel and casino employees including dishwashers and housekeepers, Greenhouse explains how the culinary union and the Chicago Teachers Union “embolden” the General Motors employees as they continue to strike. “They saw the teachers strikes had huge public support,” Greenhouse says. “I think the GM workers are tapping into that sentiment.”
