2:44Now PlayingAs the Watergate scandal unfolded, whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg stood trial for leaking a secret Department of Defense study to The New York Times that would later become known as the Pentagon Papers. Ellsberg was a former military analyst who worked on the study that found the United States knew early on in its political and military involvement in Vietnam that the war was unwinnable. As his case proceeded, it was found that the same White House officials who worked to sabotage Nixon's Democratic opponents also burglarized Ellsberg's psychiatrist's office in an effort to discredit him and wiretapped various people who were possibly involved in the leak or the antiwar movement. Ellsberg was potentially facing up to 115 years in prison under the Espionage Act before all charges were dropped against him as evidence mounted against the administration's involvement with the case. In his 2018 documentary "Watergate — Or How We Learned to Stop an Out of Control President,” filmmaker Charles Ferguson shows how the secrets behind the Nixon presidency unraveled in real time on American television.
