4:54Now PlayingAaron Edmond rose to fame in the '90s as a member of the hip hop group Steady Mobb'n, whose first record landed them on the Billboard Top 40. Edmond, known as Crooked Eye or Crook, is one of at least 10 unhoused residents living in a small encampment under a freeway in Oakland, California. There are approximately 90 similar encampments across Oakland, where anywhere from 6 to 100 unhoused residents live in makeshift shelters, according to local organizers. Edmond has lived for nearly three years in a "roaming shelter" he built in the back of a U-Haul truck. He says he was one of many residents "herded" there by police who told them, "It's either this or jail." Many residents of this encampment were pushed out of a larger encampment nearby after it was shut down by the city for development. "They don't care," says Edmond. "All they want to do is acquire land to build property for the rich to make more money off of and the poor is just being decimated at every turn."
