2:37Now PlayingAn indigenous forest protector named Paulo Paulino Guajajara was shot dead in the Amazon by illegal loggers on Saturday. It is the latest incident in a wave of violence targeting indigenous land protectors since the election of Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro last year — but João Coimbra Sousa of Amazon Watch says the history of land conflict in the state of Maranhão between indigenous people and corporate forces extends back much further than the reign of the contentious far-right president. "Most of those conflicts began with the colonization of Brazil," says Sousa. "When you see how well-protected the indigenous lands are, you understand economically why they want to invade such territories. … The killing of Paulo Paulino Guajajara is directly linked to that idea of eternal expansion of the agribusiness."
