3:31Now PlayingThe director of Human Rights Watch's Israel-Palestine office, Omar Shakir, was deported from Israel on Monday under a 2017 anti-BDS law that bars boycott supporters from the state. In what Shakir describes as a "systematic assault on human rights organizations," the Israeli government barred the organization from entering occupied Palestinian territories and previously attempted to revoke Shakir's work permit. The organization has never taken a stance on the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement, but has asked companies such as Airbnb to stop conducting business in the occupied West Bank and contributing to the oppression of Palestinians. By deporting Shakir in an attempt to hinder Human Rights Watch's work, he says Israel is "trying to silence the messenger instead of dealing with the human rights issues that are taking place on the ground." Shakir is the first individual to be deported from Israel under the 2017 law.
