as posted by the channelIn Iraq, members of an Iran-backed militia withdrew from the U.S. embassy in Baghdad Wednesday after being tear-gassed by American security forces. The standoff began Tuesday when the militia members broke through the embassy's reception area chanting "Death to America." Meanwhile, thousands rallied outside the embassy to protest a slew of U.S. airstrikes in Iraq and Syria that killed at least 24 people. The events point to a quagmire with the U.S. and Iran both competing for influence in the war-torn region. But Guardian correspondent Ghaith Abdul-Ahad says that placing too much emphasis on a simplistic U.S.-Iran angle detracts from the legitimate grievances of Iraq's pro-democracy protesters — many of whom reject the foreign influence of both Iran and the U.S. in Iraq's affairs. "They don't want to be part of this Iran-versus-American narrative," says Abdul-Ahad, who adds that this rhetoric also fuels the conditions for potential civil war. "It is a country awash with weapons, with militias, with military forces — and a new civil war can spark within hours."
