2:57Now PlayingThe Trump administration is barring foreign nationals who recently traveled to China from entering the U.S. as a response to the coronavirus outbreak, adding to the litany of countries on Trump's "travel ban" list. The virus, which originated in the Hubei province of China, has affected 11 people in the U.S. so far. "We are in very dangerous territory right now where we need not only infrastructural guidance but moral guidance in how to respond to a frightening epidemic," says Pulitzer Prize-winning science writer Laurie Garrett, who adds that the measure is a "racial response, a kind of xenophobia that is always in America this close to the surface." Garrett says Trump's travel ban is already being framed by the Chinese government and media as a racist attack against Chinese people, which could have serious political and economic ramifications — including endangering U.S. access to important pharmaceuticals like diabetes and heart disease drugs, most of which come from China.
