2:55Now PlayingRep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York says she and her fellow Squad members — Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan — come from the kinds of backgrounds not normally represented in the halls of power. This is cause for celebration for many voters, she says, but it also creates a strong backlash. "There is so much effort put in to not tell these stories. Now we’ve been elected on a mandate to tell this truth, and that creates a reaction," she says. Ocasio-Cortez, widely known as AOC, was speaking with Democracy Now!'s Nermeen Shaikh along with the rest of the Squad at a special event for The Rising Majority held at Howard University in early February.
