As the COVID-19 crisis sweeps across the United States, the Trump administration has sent mixed signals about whether undocumented immigrants are at risk of being deported by ICE when seeking testing or treatment for the disease. "There is no reason that any person going for testing should actually be afraid that immigration will somehow come in contact with them," says Angelica Salas, executive director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights in California, or CHIRLA. The organization is calling for equal access and equal treatment for immigrants during this global public health crisis. "There should be no requirement for residency, citizenship status, or any other kind of request for information."
