The playwright devoted much of his life to fighting the AIDS crisis, demanding that U.S. institutions address the epidemic that wreaked havoc on queer communities in the 1980s and '90s. His confrontational tactics challenged the establishment at a time when many — including President Ronald Reagan — preferred to ignore the public health emergency. Fellow playwright Tony Kushner recalls the time Kramer got invited to a White House dinner in Reagan's second term and used the occasion to protest Reagan's inaction. "When he got up to speak, the president of the United States, Larry stood up and started to boo him loudly," Kushner says, calling it "an astonishing moment."
