2:58Now PlayingIn a historic vote Sunday, the Mississippi state legislature passed a bill to remove the Confederate battle emblem from its state flag — making it the last state in the nation to do so. This comes on the heels of another historic bill, Georgia's House Bill 426, which enhances criminal penalties for crimes committed on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation and other identity vectors. NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson calls the hate crimes bill a "tremendous victory." He also warns that such legislation can be undermined by other laws on the books that permit citizen's arrests. "We have to be careful," he says, when we have "so many people who decide they're going to take a law in their own hands unjustifiably." He argues that if state legislators are not also reexamining citizen's arrest laws, they "continue to put people's lives in danger."
