The Democratic Party is facing criticism over the lack of diversity in its primetime lineup of speakers for the virtual DNC. Former 2020 presidential candidate and Obama administration cabinet member Julián Castro — the only Latinx person who ran for the Democratic presidential nomination — said he was not asked to speak this year. In the week prior to the convention, Castro had expressed concern over the fact that "there were 35 primetime speakers, and only three of them were Latinx," he said. "I don't believe that … represented the beautiful coalition that Democrats have put together." Looking ahead to the election, the Biden campaign must continue to focus on voter outreach and registration efforts that target Latinx communities, he says. "It’s going to require a lot of other work from the nonprofit organizations that do voter registration, like Voto Latino and a number of others, to get folks out in what is going to be a very unusual year in terms of the mechanics of voting," Castro tells Democracy Now!
