Kendi reflects on the groundbreaking superhero film's centering of pre-colonial African societies, which empowered Black viewers to imagine a world without colonialism. "Before colonization, some of the greatest, most powerful and wealthiest and most technologically and intellectually advanced empires in the world were in Africa," says Kendi. "The reason why there's so much poverty in Africa is not because there's something wrong with African people. … If not for colonialism, if not for the slave trade, there may be a Wakanda." Kendi says it's hard to describe "what Wakanda meant — what it still means to Black people."
