This comes as the Russian military has deployed heavy artillery batteries and laid anti-personnel landmines at the site in recent weeks. "Nuclear plants are extremely vulnerable to external attack in the context of a war zone," says Shaun Burnie, senior nuclear specialist with Greenpeace, who says something as simple as the loss of power could unleash "massive releases of radioactivity" at rates worse than the Cheronobyl disaster of 1986.
