After failing to pull successive U.S. presidents into war against Iran, Benjamin Netanyahu “saw his opportunity” with Donald Trump, says Daniel Levy, president of the U.S./Middle East Project and a former Israeli peace negotiator. Netanyahu has for decades argued that Iran is on the brink of becoming a nuclear power, but Israel is the only nuclear-armed state in the region, Levy notes.

Levy says building a "Pax Greater Israel" is the larger project. “This is about how far Israel can extend its dominion, how much of a hard-power, dominant hegemon it can be in the region, seizing parts of Syria or of Lebanon, trying to finish an eradicationist approach to the Palestinians.”
