Dixit's new book, “The Many Lives of Syeda X: A People's History of Invisible India,” is about Syeda, a working-class woman in Delhi who has worked 50 jobs over 30 years. One of those jobs is shelling California almonds as a piece-rate worker — meaning she is paid based on her output, not the hours she works.
