1. Make consequences reasonable ex: 24 hrs of no electronics may be more reasonable the 1 week without electronics, No sleepover after a birthday party may be more reasonable then missing the whole party,
3. Do not threaten consequences that you can't keep. This simply teaches them to walk all over you.
4. Stick with what you suggested even though it may tear your heart out. When you feel like the world's worst parent, you are doing a great job.
5. No second chances. Second chances reinforce kid's desire to push limits.
6. The consequence should fit the crime.
7. Careful about throwing out consequences when you are extremely angry. Take a minute or two to cool down and think of the appropriate consequence.
8. For teenagers, write consequences down like a business contract. Get their feedback while making the list. This makes them feel grown up and more likely to cooperate with the program.
