The openings told us the critical time period occurred after Adrian Gonzales arrived at Robb Elementary School and spoke with Melody Flores, but did not go into the school until some minutes later after dozens of shots had already been fired. From the law on omissions, we're expecting the police to show when Adrian knew where the shooter was and when it was clear he still posed a threat to innocent life, as well as what Adrian should have done differently that could have saved the kids.

The jurors won't get to take their notes into the jury room, so first impressions are going to matter. The State is largely spending the first week familiarizing the jury with what happened that day, the layout of the school, and the horrifying consequences to the children and teachers in Rooms 111 and 112. If the trial were about whether a school shooting took place, they've achieved that many times over, but so far the impressions are not tending to show that Adrian was uniquely responsible for what happened inside the school. The defense is focusing on factors beyond his control like the distance and character of the area between Adrian and the shooter, as well as the critical role that school safety failures, like bypassing locks that allowed the shooter access inside, played in the devastation that resulted.
