Miller became a hero during the attack on Pearl Harbor, helping wounded sailors and manning an anti-aircraft gun despite having no training to do so. He later became the first Black American awarded the Navy Cross.
The future USS Doris Miller was supposed to become the first U.S. aircraft carrier named for an African American and an enlisted sailor. Now, according to ABC News, that historic honor may be reconsidered. No final decision has been announced.
