Steve Harvey Ruins Miss Universe 2015 Pageant - Was It Totally His Fault?

At Miss Universe 2015, Steve Harvey accidentally announced that Miss Colombia (Ariadna Gutiérrez) had won the competition, but it was actually Miss Philippines (Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach) who was to be crowned. He said he read the index card wrong which had the Miss Colombia listed as "first runner up." It was a very big mistake that caused an international embarrassment, as it was aired in over 100 countries and involved at least 80 different countries around the world in competition.

The question has to be, is this Steve Harvey's fault? The answer is yes and no. Yes, because he is the one who made the mistake. Many people say that the card was difficult to read and had a strange design, but the reality is that the card was idiot-proof. All Mr. Harvey had to do was read the card exactly as it was written. Did he have time to rehearse? Had he seen the card before? Those are valid questions. Steve Harvey does great on his TV shows, Family Feud and The Steve Harvey Show. However, live beauty pageants aren't in his wheelhouse. He even admitted as much in the post-event press conference.

Much of this blame has to be laid at the feet of one Donald Trump. If not for the remarks he made about "Mexicans" potentially being "rapists and murderers" (although he was referring to illegal immigrants) there would have been no fallout first from Univision, who he sued for $500 million, then with NBC who cut their business ties with him. Many people associated with the pageant, including hosts Jeannie Mai, Cheryl Burke, and Roselyn Sanchez decided to drop out around the same time of the Univision fallout. This caused Donald Trump to buy NBC's share of Miss USA, Miss Universe, and Miss Teen USA. Owning all shares of the companies, he sold them to Ari Emanuel of WME/IMG, who is now in operation of the pageant and tapped Steve Harvey to host, who made one of the biggest mistakes of his career.
