8:02Now Playing19 year old Quintonio LeGrier, an engineering student at Northern Illinois University, was armed with a steel baseball bat when he was confronted then shot and killed by police on the Westside of Chicago in the Austin neighborhood. The downstairs neighbor, a 55 year old mother of 5 named Betty Jones was also killed by accident, as a result of stray bullets from the police when they were shooting Mr. LeGrier.
The situation started because LeGrier has a history of mental illness. His father said that he was banging on the door to his bedroom at around 4:00am Sunday Morning, December 27th 2015. Antonio LeGrier, the father, said that his son said "You won't scare me!" as he continued to beat and bang on the door to his bedroom. Antonio, obviously aware his son was having a mental issue, did not let the son into his bedroom, and decided to call the police instead. He also called his downstairs neighbor, Ms. Betty Jones, to alert her to not let his son in her door, either. And to not open the door until police arrived.
The police arrive, and that's when things go from bad to worse. According to an official police statement, Quintonio LeGrier was combative with the officers, as he still held the steel baseball bat. They proceeded to open fire on him, presumably to end the eminent threat that he posed. Unfortunately, they also shot and killed Betty Jones on accident, as he had opened the door when the police arrived, and the bullets meant for Quintonio hit her.
The family of both parties are obviously upset, and understandably so. Especially for Ms. Betty Jones, because she was not the initiator of the situation. The police, however, are not to blame. Quintonio LeGrier was combative enough to have his own father call the police on him. So apparently, there wasn't much he could do to stop the situation before needing authorities. The elder LeGrier had his son admitted to the hospital around Thanksgiving for medical help, maybe it was not effective.
