7:19Now PlayingStarting January 1, 2016 in the state of California, a new law will go into effect that allows for a Gun Violence Restraining Order (GVRO). The law essentially states that if a person is deemed to be a potential danger to themselves or others may be petitioned to have their guns taken away from them for a certain period of time, maybe 21 days in most cases. This decision will ultimately be in the hands of a judge who will determine whether the person the GVRO was taken out on is a legitimate threat or not.
The law was initially proposed as a response to the 2014 University of California at Santa Barbara mass shooting, where six people were killed at the hands of Elliot Rodger. It reeks of political opportunism and also state government over-reach. What has not been easily made available to the general public are the criteria that one must meet in order to be deemed "unsafe" to have their legally owned guns. It's akin the oft-mentioned "watch list" that many presidential candidates and Barack Hussein Obama himself like to talk about.
What are the criteria to get one placed on a watch list? What are the criteria to have one's personal property removed? The second amendment clearly states "shall not be infringed!" Apparently, the United States constitution doesn't have much influence in American politics anymore. Hopefully this trend will change with the election of next President.
