10:07Now PlayingStacey Dash, Damon Dash's cousin, responded to Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee's comments relating to a lack of diversity and racism against blacks in the Oscars Award show presented by the Academy on Fox News. Dash said "either you have integration, or you have segregation." Television stations like BET and the subsequent BET Awards, NAACP Image awards cannot exist, if we want to have integration at the same time. She essentially said that if it's good for the goose, it's good for the gander. Black history month was also mentioned. She says that black history is American history. We're Americans and that's it.
I agree with the crux of her argument. It is a hypocritical stance to say that the Oscar Awards lack diversity, and that somehow people should boycott it, while at the same time championing a lack of diversity at the BET Awards, where everyone is black. It's a simple hypocritical stance that is easily recognized by any outsider looking in.
Many people would argue that "equal representation" in the Oscars is needed for blacks to be recognized in the mainstream. But recognized by who? The Academy is not a representation of the United States or the world at large. It's simply a group of people who give their opinion. The true "mainstream" are the people who consume film on a consistent basis. If not for their support, then these popular actors would not be in contention for any award at all.
