9:38Now PlayingThe Gotthard Base Tunnel Opening Ceremony in Switzerland has drawn a lot of attention from around the world. Many have called it satanic, others have called it simply "strange" and "weird." Not much is actually being said about the fact that it is the longest tunnel in the world, around 35 miles through the Alps. Or the fact that it took 11 billion Euro and 17 years to complete. Or the geographical advantage that it produces, allowing trains of cargo and people to more freely flow from Italy through Switzerland on over to Germany and France. The biggest topic on everyone's mind is the opening day ceremony that does not seem to fit the occasion.
People, at this event, were oddly dressed and were equally oddly behaving. There are individuals that had on large goat head masks, one person looked to be a somewhat androgynous male or a slender female wearing a large baby mask with angel wings. Other people were slinking about inside and outside of the actual tunnel in their underwear. There are some scenes of suggested homosexuality that harken back to a stranger time in European history - that of the Holy Roman Empire. This should not be seen as an indictment on the European people, however. It is more of an indictment of the leadership of Europe.
More specifically, the heads of state that were in attendance, including, but not limited to - the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the President of France Francois Hollande. Many of these powerful leaders seem to be ushering in a new sort of Europe, one that emphasizes serfdom within the European Union (E.U.) rather than nationalism of long-standing Republics within Europe. Some would say that analysis is off beat, or more like a conspiracy theory, but day by day, that seems to be more of a probable reality than not.
