The Austrian Presidential Elections held on May 22nd of 2016 have been overturned due to irregularities in the voting process. The Freedom Party, the party of the "far-right" candidate Norbert Hofer, launched an appeal of the election results after widespread rumors of voter absentee / mail-in ballot voter fraud. Gerhart Holzinger, head of the Constitutional Court, ruled in their favor.

The main reason for the do-over is the glaring and obvious problems with the absentee ballots. The first thing is the 146% turnout rate which was recorded in one voting jurisdiction. Although an abnormally high turnout number may be due to absentee ballots coming in to a place where the people don't actually live, the number is much too high and obviously impossible. Another thing discovered by the Freedom Party that was brought to the attention of the Constitutional Court is evidence of children and foreign citizens voting, which is obviously not allowed. Also, there were 82 districts which had already opened the ballots and sorted them as being for or against Van Der Bellen and Hofer, without the oversight of the Election Committee, which is required.

The next step is for the election to be re-run, a "do-over" which will happen later on in 2016, in September or October. Alexander Van Der Bellen, the winner of the May 22nd election, must step down immediately. Van Der Bellen and Norbert Hofer must run against each other again to determine who the Austrian President will be. All eyes will be on this election, as it marks a chance that the first "far-right" President will be elected in Europe (at least in modern times). And it also represents Democracy in action. If there are any other irregularities this time around, it will be very embarrassing for the nation of Austria and for Europe in general.
