YouTube Description
as posted by the channelDonald Trump and Hillary Clinton had the very first Presidential debate between the Democrats and Republicans of the 2016 campaign cycle on Monday, September 26, 2016 at Hofstra University. The event was "moderated" by Lester Holt of NBC Nightly News. It was a 90 minute long event without commercial break that featured both of them standing up at their respective podiums. It was expected to get as many as 100 million viewers, which is right up there with the Super Bowl, one of the biggest sporting events that happens in the world every year.
The audience was instructed from the beginning to not do any cheering or audible interruptions as to keep the debate flowing smoothly. Lester Holt was supposed to be moderating, but throughout the debate, he did less actual moderating, as in keeping the candidates under control, and more hammering Trump on certain questions such as his business practices, his tax return drama, the birther issue, nuclear weapons for foreign countries, and more. He pressed harder on Trump than he did on Hillary. Holt did not ask Hillary any questions about her emails, Benghazi, or her health which have all been very prominent news stories. He also interrupted Trump while Trump was speaking much more than Hillary.
Aside from Lester Holt's interaction with the debate, Trump came off strong, but also what some would call disjointed and not as smooth and polished as Hillary. Trump made more valid points than Hillary did, but Hillary had the better delivery for people who prefer that very smooth and polished, rehearsed, style ... vs the bravado and off the cuff style of Donald Trump.
Many people on the right feel like Trump lost the debate because he did not hammer Hillary hard enough on important issues that Holt failed to bring up... they also criticized him for not being very well polished. To rebut that point briefly, Trump's strategy was most likely not to please the right. It was to try and gain people from the left and center, which he may have done. People on the right are not going to flock to Hillary because of his performance if they didn't like it. However, Michael Moore of all people in the world, had to eat his hat and say that Trump did a good job.
On the other hand, Hillary, did not gain anyone from the right or the center. Her constituency has pretty much remained the same. If anything, she lost individuals to Donald Trump that feel like she did not atone for lies that she has told... and also some that feel like the media is unfairly in her corner, shielding her from reality.
Overall, the debate was enjoyable, but not fantastic. The vice presidential debate on Tuesday, October 4th 2016 may wind up being better, because most people don't know Tim "Giftgate" Kaine or Mike Pence. Hopefully the moderator will be impartial and behave as a servant for the flow of a good debate, and not media partiality.
