As a result, Obama’s speech on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 was his final one as President. It was dubbed as a “farewell speech” and delivered in his adopted hometown of Chicago, Illinois. The speech was broadcast on all major networks and even some smaller ones. Barack Obama is a great orator but speaking skills do not a factual and correct speech make. His oration skills also did not prevent the speech from being very divisive.
First of all, the speech was littered with lies. Obama did a lot of what could be called self-congratulating. Talking about how the unemployment numbers have gone down. While true, does not paint the true picture about the types of low paying, part-time jobs he created. It also doesn’t speak to all of the permanently unemployed people who no longer receive unemployment benefits that do not count in the unemployment number.
The speech was also peppered with dog whistles. The main one was his consistent usage of the word “Democracy” to describe the United States of America. Which of course, is inaccurate. If not, a flat out lie. We have democratic elements to our governance but the United States is a Republic, not a Democracy. A big shining example of this distinction is the Electoral College. It is not a sheer Democratic process because we do not live in a Democracy.
Aside from all of the lies and half-truths that were told during the speech, another thing to observe was the divisive nature of it. Those who did not like Obama didn’t gain any more respect for him. They just instantly recognize the lies and harbor further resentment towards him. They then realize why they voted against Obama again. Individuals who voted for Obama and love him will continue to do so. They view the speech as inspiring. Breathtaking. Classy. And of course, the opposite of what Donald Trump will be as President.
At the end of the day, the sides on the fractured “aisle” of the United States are going to have to… well… unite in order to get America back on track after Obama leaves office. Only time can tell if that goal will be realized or not.
