Obama To Redistribute $1 Billion To Low Income Schools From City And State Money (REACTION)

Barack Obama has passed a series of last minute regulations and pardoning, one in particular being the redistribution of around $1 billion dollars to low income public schools, diverting funds from higher income public schools. The funds in question are city and state, NOT federal, which is a key thing to note because the orders are coming from the federal level. It represents an unprecedented thing - the federal Government dictating the fashion in which city and state education funds are spent. Some will view this as clear federal overreach and some will view it as a necessary thing to happen which will impact children in a positive way.

The dollar amount in question varies from $800 million to around $2.2 billion. None of the money is federal and it will all have to be taken from higher income schools then redistributed to lower income schools. The thought process is that the money will provide resources to low income kids that will improve their education. But the question must be asked… will that plan actually work? Does an infusion of money into low income schools taken from high income schools improve education? It may help with physical materials like books, computers, classroom hardware like desks and lighting, and also the building itself, but can the bump in money produce a better outcome at low income schools?

One thing to understand is that Newark City Public schools, which exists in a very high crime area, get the most amount of money per pupil out of every other school system in the United States of America. There is still a problem with basic literacy. Literacy in Detroit is comparable to the Central African Republic but the teachers can make upwards of 71k per year. So what’s the problem?

A key in the education gap between low income and high income schools (the obvious parallel here is black and white schools) is the home life of the students. White kids generally have more stable homes due to having more two parent households than black kids. White kids generally get educated at home by their mothers so they have a foundation upon which to base their school education on. Black kids are far too often sent to school with no preparation - they can’t read, write, spell their own name, or even count to 10 while white kids can. That’s no fault of the school system, it’s a fault of the parents. And it’s nothing money thrown at the problem as Mark Zuckerberg and the infamous $100 million gift to Newark City Public schools which vanished into thin air.
