Betsy DeVos, the current Secretary of Education appointed by President Donald Trump, recently visited Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Florida to deliver a commencement speech. Within the first few words she spoke while on stage, boos began to cascade from the crowd. Not only did students at this graduation ceremony decide to boo her, they also stood up and turned their backs on her while she was speaking. At least one person actually had to get thrown out of the commencement. The President of BCC, Edison O. Jackson, interrupted Mrs. Devos to take to the mic and tell graduating students that if their behavior did not cease, their diplomas would be mailed to them. Meaning, they would not be able to participate in the ceremony.

An important thing to note here is that Bethune-Cookman is an HBCU (Historically Black College or University.) This is important to note for a few reasons. First of all, Betsy DeVos is a champion of school choice and charter schools, two things that have been attributed with turning the lives of children around in predominantly black inner city areas. Second, she has praised HBCUs in the media calling them “pioneers of school choice.” She got in trouble for saying that because some say that there was no choice but that’s a debate for another day. Lastly, the black population overwhelming always votes Democrat. So to have a Republican appointed by and an ally of Donald Trump was apparently enough to send the predominantly, if not all, black graduating class into a frenzy.

This situation underlines a major issue in the black community… a lack of respect for authority and also an unwillingness to hear other points of view. One question that gets asked of conservatives a lot is why they struggle to get black voters. A counter question would be … “how can conservatives get black voters if they are not even willing to listen to another point of view?” Most of the people there who protested were operating on groupthink and that behavior will not help them once they get out into the workforce. Then you have subversive groups like the NAACP who give them excuses for negative behavior. The Florida NAACP has even called for the President of BCC to resign because of what he said during the ceremony. Until the victimhood hook and narrative ends or changes, this type of thing will happen over and over again like a broken record.
