16:17Now PlayingComedian/Actor Trae Crowder (also known as Liberal Redneck) appeared in a short video about wage stagnation. His general premise was that a decline in union membership is responsible for the aforementioned phenomenon because Americans no longer had the ability to bargain for what they “deserve.”
Crowder also stated that the term “skilled labor” is BS because all labor is skilled. Which, of course, is demonstrably false as is the claim about unions being the key to a person being able to bargain for more pay.
Some jobs do require skilled labor to do while some don’t. Flipping burgers at your local fast food restaurant is unskilled labor that everyone can do. The barrier to entry is essentially zero, outside of a prohibitively high minimum wage. However, some jobs have a skills barrier to entry. Jobs such as plumbing, welding, HVAC repair, auto repair, carpentry, masonry, advanced factory jobs… all require some level of technical knowledge and skill to perform.
Leverage is what a person really needs in order to negotiate or bargain for higher pay. Skill, experience, demand, and reputation are all things that can boost a person’s leverage. Trae Crowder brought up Kim Kardashian being rich as an example of how Americans don’t get paid based on skill. But what he failed to mention was the fact that she has leverage. Before the infamous tape with R&B singer Ray-J, she was a famous person. The daughter of famed OJ Simpson Attorney Rob Kardashian, Sr. The step-daughter of Caitlyn (Bruce) Jenner.
The tape gained a lot of attention based upon the celebrity of the people involved. She was able to get more and more attention as the years progressed and that gave her leverage to use when approached by advertisers who wanted to be part of her brand.
That’s how it works. Not through the federal Government or Unions demanding more money from employers. Employers are also able to pay more money in a more business-friendly environment. Lower taxes and less regulation promote competition between businesses for lower prices and for better employees.
