as posted by the channelRapper Meek Mill was released from prison after doing 5 months of a recommended 2-4 year sentence for probation violation on Tuesday, April 24th, 2018. Immediately after his release, he was ushered to a helicopter and flown to a Philadelphia 76ers playoff basketball game. He was sitting front row and center along with the co-owner of the team and world-famous comedian Kevin Hart. A ceremonial “Liberty Bell” which is rung before every game was rung by Mr. Mill, as he was wearing a Joel Embiid basketball jersey. ESPN and other news outlets covered the story as one of success and overcoming oppression.
But the reality here is much more simple and a little bit darker. Meek Mill deserves to be in the penitentiary. The probation violation he was in jail for was actually a culmination of many violations on at least four separate occasions. Since his original 2007 conviction… he has had several dirty urine tests coming back positive for marijuana and opiates. He has also failed to check in with his probation officer and/or lawyer on several occasions when he was supposed to. Then there was a fight he was involved with in Missouri. Lastly, he illegally popped a wheelie on a motorcycle or ATV in a music video in New York. All arrestable offenses by themselves made possible the cumulative effect of his incarceration.
Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court overturned his probation violation sentence due to the questionable integrity of a key witness in the original case, an officer who was later found to be corrupt. Some people point to this reason why he deserves to be free. But even if the officer was corrupt, there is no evidence that his original crime….drugs, guns, assault, and pointing a gun at an officer were any less real. Character attacks on the judge in the case, a black woman named Genece Brinkley, have been all over the news media perpetrated by not only Meek Mill but the media itself.
This is no more than the same old song of black men who do the wrong things being coddled like babies and celebrated. It sends the wrong message to young men, especially young black men, about personal responsibility and rewards for actions. Someone who turns their life around for the better should be celebrated with helicopter rides and front row courtside seats after a major accomplishment. Not an unrepentant, entitled rapper who got out of jail on a temporary technicality.
