9:18Now PlayingPatricio Manuel beat Hugo Aguilar on Saturday night at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, Calif. becoming the first U.S. professional transgender male boxer to win a match. Manuel, 33, won in a unanimous decision from the judges. In video captured by Golden Boy Boxing, Manuel’s win was met with boos from the crowd. Manuel was born a woman and began their transition in 2012, the last time they fought as a woman.
Obvious questions are raised here. First and foremost would be the background of the person they defeated. In the post-fight interview, Manuel said her opponent came to fight him “as a man.” But in reality, the person has never won a fight in their entire career (0-6 with 2 knockout defeats.) Another question would be about doping since people undergoing transition would be doing that with the testosterone treatments. Some would say as long as the testosterone is under a certain amount, then there is no problem. But what amount is acceptable? What if biological men have less than the baseline acceptable for trans men. Could they take testosterone to raise it?
Mainstream media will most likely praise this person as some type of iconic civil rights figure for being the first trans man to defeat a biological man. Reality is that this is most likely a staged situation for optics and is a dangerous precedent to set. Biological men damage other men badly in a boxing ring as was the case with Muhammad Ali and even Mike Tyson himself. So to have biological WOMEN in the ring with natural men is even more dangerous.
