A 30 year old woman by the name of Cyntoia Brown will be granted clemency on August 7th of 2019, 15 years to the exact date of her initial arrest for murdering 43 year old real estate agent Johnny Allen in Nashville, TN. At the time, she was a 16-year-old runaway turned prostitute living with a pimp named “Cutthroat.” Allen picked her up at a Nashville area Sonic with money for the purposes of sex. They wind up at Allen’s home and at some point during the night as he slept, she takes out her gun and kills him. She then proceeds to steal valuable items from his home such as guns and his wallet, maybe even his car, then returns to the pimp.

Cyntoia was arrested shortly after the incident then later convicted of first degree murder and aggravated robbery. She received a life sentence for her crimes. Rumor has it that she would have received less time if she testified against her pimp but she declined to do so. Probably because of the fear that he had instilled in her.

While her crime was heinous, it’s difficult to say she should have received life in prison for the crimes she committed due to the particular situation. She was a troubled youth runaway, an easy target for manipulative people like pimps. Aside from using girls as under-aged sex workers, pimps also tend to coerce girls to steal for them. Johnny Allen’s murder and robbery was probably orchestrated by the pimp. While Cyntoia holds responsibility, those circumstances can’t be ignored and a more generous sentence is what was called for.

Many celebrities such as Kim Kardashian (again) over the past few weeks and months have come to her defense on social media, lobbying for her clemency. A documentary was released about her in 2011 which outlines her troubled youth, potential fetal alcohol syndrome which lowered her IQ and rationale, in addition to the obvious issue of being an under-aged prostitute.
