Ancestry Pulls Slavery-Era Ad After BACKLASH!

Ancestry pulled an ad for their Canadian market after a massive backlash of people who claimed the ad was promoting a romanticized version of slavery.

The 30 second commercial wa set in what appeared to be slavery-era America. A white man was encouraging what appeared to be an enslaved black woman to escape into Canada with him. They were not on any type of plantation or a bondage environment and they were dressed similarly. He presented her a ring and the commercial then goes on to encourage viewers to find more of their family.

While this scenario most certainly did happen during that period of time, some people apparently don’t want to see it or revisit it. They would rather the commercial be one of the black woman being a victim to the white man. There is also a contingency of people who would have preferred to see a black man and woman struggling to escape to their freedom so the “white savior” trope doesn’t get used.

Ancestry apologized for the ad but they shouldn’t have. While there was most certainly violence against black women at the hands of white men during that point in time, there were also consensual relationships between enslaved and free blacks with white men and women. History shouldn’t be shunned, it should be known, whether it is pleasant to witness or not.
