Sports Illustrated Debuts the BURKINI! What's Really Going On?

Somali-American Halima Aden is the first woman to wear a contraption known as the “burkini” in Sports Illustrated Magazine. It appears to be a bodysuit typically worn by scuba divers with a light-fitting set of middle-eastern garb on top. She has received praise from all around the globe for her “bravery” due to her outfit. Some have even championed her as a figure of women’s liberation. The reality of the situation does not seem to line up with the popular narrative.

Burkas are Islamic garb worn in the middle east and are typically mandated for the purpose of women’s modesty. Although many Islamic countries have different levels of modesty that are required, the general idea remains the same. Modesty for women. As a result, other forms of immodesty aside from clothing are also not tolerated. Beauty pageants, makeup, inviting poses, etc are frowned upon. So for Halima Aden to lay in a puddle of water in a somewhat suggestive pose would be considered “haram” (forbidden) to many in the Islamic world. So would the magazine in general.

What appears to be happening here is a magazine attempting to gain attention by taking advantage of a pop culture ideology by masking it as a celebration of oppressed religious ideologies. Will the inevitable backlash as a result not only in the West, but the east and more specifically, the MIDDLE EAST be worth it? Only time will tell.
