10:36Now PlayingDaryl Morey, GM of the NBA’s Houston Rockets, tweeted out an image in support of recent Hong Kong protests. This, of course, angered mainland China due to the protests being against them and in favor of a sovereign Hong Kong. Almost immediately, all business relationships between China and the Houston Rockets were suspended. That move in particular has put China’s relationship with the entire NBA and all of it’s other teams in jeopardy.
One would think that the NBA would come out in support of Morey, but that did not happen. As socially conscious aka “woke” as the NBA is, they aren’t dumb by a long shot. They understand that angering the mainland Chinese government will result in a big loss of revenue. So their only course of action was to retreat and apologize, which is exactly what happened.
Many people criticized the NBA for this action, but the reality is that there was not much of a choice here. Either apologize and try to salvage the Chinese relationship which is worth billions, or don’t apologize and risk losing the entire relationship with all NBA teams. Being “woke” for big corporations like the NBA only works when it makes money. When it loses money, it gets dropped like a bad habit.
