14:24Now PlayingThe 2020 Oscar Awards (Academy Awards) are now in the book. It was a snoozefest no doubt, but there were some eyebrow-raising moments. Hollywood Boulevard was the setting for the Awards and it started off with a red carpet / runway scene. Judging by the scene and all of the black entertainers on set, one may think that the Oscars solved it's "diversity" issues and Los Angeles had solved it's homeless junkie problem. Neither one of those are the case.
The Academy may want the viewer to think that they have solved their diversity issue, but that's simply for PR. In reality, they don't particularly care, and they shouldn't. It should be more about the arts. Although that's seeming less and less like the case. It's hard to tell if this is still the Oscars or the "Wokesters."
Joaquin Phoenix gave a three minute speech that bordered on the edge of vegan extremism. He also somehow linked queer rights, indigenous rights, and other non-white, non privileged people to the rights of animals. Which was very strange, of course. Eminem came out on stage and performed Lose Yourself, which confused many people in the crowd and at home. A South Korean movie won best picture, and many people (some on the right) thought this was un-American and railed against the Oscars. Although the Oscars have routinely given awards to obscure foreign titles that most Americans have never heard of nor will ever see.
Overall, The 2020 Oscar Awards just showed off more of the same Hollywood. Smoke and mirrors, cliquishness, and very little substance.
