Walmart has removed all self-checkout lanes from two more stores, one in St. Louis, Missouri, and another in Cleveland, Ohio. This latest move comes after Walmart removed all self-checkout lanes from three New Mexico locations. An official statement from the retail giant says this was done after feedback from customers and employees. Local shopping patterns were also taken into consideration.
This could, however, be something else that Walmart is not speaking about publicly. Retail theft is rising, and self-checkout locations are perfect for stealing small items. Walmart may be removing self-checkouts and replacing them with traditional checkout lanes because the cost for a cashier may be cheaper than self-checkout theft. Target, Dollar General and other retail stores are probably altering or eliminating self-checkout lanes for the same purpose.
