Water is an essential element of life, whether it is being used for drinking or for growing our food. The ECOsystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on Space Station (ECOSTRESS) instrument will study plant health and water stress from the vantage point of the International Space Station.

ECOSTRESS leverages the ISS’ unique orbit, enabling scientists to study how plants use water throughout the day. The instrument’s high-resolution thermal radiometer works like a giant thermometer to measure plants’ temperature and the amount of heat radiating from Earth’s surface. ECOSTRESS will get a global picture every 3-5 days at a resolution of approximately 200 feet x 200 feet, in some cases observing crop health down to an individual farmer’s field.
